Fluency Assessment
Fluency is essential in order for students to develop their comprehension and grow as readers. Below is an assessment report based on a fluency assessment I gave to a second grader. The following expert from the report explains the important role fluency plays in learning to read:
According to Hudson, Lande and Pullen (2005) there are three primary aspects of fluency and each of them have an impact on a reader’s ability to comprehend. Readers who are putting much effort into decoding, reading at a very slow, word by word pace, or reading without intonation will have a very difficult time comprehending what is read. Inaccuracy when reading prevents the reader from understanding what was read. A low level of automaticity forces the reader to read slowly, decoding word by word, making it easy to miss the combined meaning. Finally, if a reader is not prosodic that can hinder them from fully understanding a text or it can be evidence that they are not understanding. (p.703)
